Painting a More Welcoming, Equitable, and Walkable Rome-Floyd

Our public art initiatives bring life, vibrant color, and community pride to public spaces across Rome and Floyd County, transforming ordinary walls into cultural landmarks. We believe that public spaces should belong to everyone. By integrating art into our streets, we foster a safer, more welcoming, and equitable environment where every resident feels a deep sense of belonging.

By blending creativity with direct community action, Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful empowers volunteers to pick up a paintbrush and take direct ownership of their neighborhood’s visual story.

Why Public Art? The Science of Murals

At Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful, we are often asked: Why does an environmental stewardship organization paint murals? The answer is simple: We aren't just decorating walls—we are engineering community care. Human behavior is deeply tied to environmental psychology. When a public space feels neglected, dark, or barren, litter and vandalism naturally increase. Conversely, when a space is vibrant, cared for, and visually engaging, a profound psychological shift occurs within the community.

Here is how public art acts as a powerful catalyst for safety, equity, and civic pride, backed by national data:

60 %

Drop in Vandalism & Graffiti

According to the Center for Active Design, introducing community-led murals to a public space reduces illegal graffiti and littering by up to 60%. Tagging or littering a blank brick wall feels consequence-free; messing with a beautiful piece of local art that neighbors worked together to paint feels like a violation of the community.

84 %

Increase in Pedestrian Foot Traffic & Walkability

Studies by Americans for the Arts show that 84% of residents feel a stronger sense of safety and are significantly more likely to walk through an urban area if it features high-quality public art. Colorful walls and decorated walkways naturally act as "traffic calmers," slowing down cars, increasing pedestrian safety, and inviting families to explore their city on foot.

74 %

Boost in Neighborly Trust & Community Pride

Public art fosters immense social equity. In national surveys, 74% of citizens state that public art makes them feel a deeper sense of belonging and pride in where they live. It bridges cultural gaps, ensures that beautiful spaces aren't restricted by income levels, and gives underrepresented neighborhoods a loud, vibrant voice.

How This Ties Back to Our Mission

Our ultimate goal at KRFB is to cultivate a strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and pride in our shared spaces. We cannot expect citizens to protect and care for an environment they do not feel connected to. By hosting community painting days, we invite volunteers to put down roots right on our city walls.

A resident who spends a Saturday afternoon helping paint a local mural is a resident who will walk that street with their head held high—actively picking up litter, reporting illegal dumping, and fiercely protecting the neighborhood they helped create.
