Water Protection

Because the Rome-Floyd municipal stormwater system routes street runoff directly into our rivers untreated, roadside trash quickly becomes a water pollution problem. What washes down a city drain ends up in our rivers. KRFB targets this directly with our signature water-based cleanup programs.

Paddle & Pick Up:

The Local Litter Index

To maximize our efficiency and respond to litter challenges faster than ever before, Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful has advanced its data-driven approach through the development of a custom GIS Litter Index Tool. This digital mapping layer modernizes how KRFB identifies, measures, and tracks litter across Rome and Floyd County.

The tool aligns perfectly with the reporting standards required by Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation (KGBF), ensuring our evaluations meet national benchmarks while drastically enhancing our local decision-making.

Purpose & Benefits of the GIS Layer:

Visualize Hotspots:

We map litter concentrations across the community through an accurate, live, map-based digital interface.

Track Trends Annually:

The tool allows KRFB to monitor where environmental conditions improve, decline, or remain consistent over time.

Targeted Intervention:

Data-driven insights help us strategically plan cleanup events, direct resources where they are needed most, and deploy targeted education or beautification initiatives.

Accountability & Transparency:

By integrating GIS technology, we can demonstrate the true effectiveness of KRFB programs and volunteer efforts through quantifiable, visual improvement.

What is GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information System. At its simplest, it is a computer mapping system that captures, stores, and displays data tied to specific locations. Think of it like a digital map with layers of invisible information stacked on top of it.

While a regular map just shows you where a road or river sits, a GIS map can show you the road, plus a layer showing exactly where storm drains are, plus a layer showing where volunteers have reported litter hotspots.

By connecting "where things are" with "what things are like there," GIS helps the city and KRFB understand patterns, communicate clearly, and make much smarter management decisions.
